Minutes from January, 2012 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Rachel Wessels at 6:30 p.m.

Treasurer’s report was $840.58. In 2011, $120 was collected in the Christmas fund. A check for that amount was given to the Salvation Army in December, 2011.

For birthdays this year, the honoree can choose between a binding card or a fat quarter. Celebrating a January birthday was Lynn Currin.

Old Business:

Raffle tickets for the Christmas quilt displayed at Miss Lou’s continue to be sold. Guild members can get tickets to sell from Debbie Powell or Karen Hanny.

Charity quilts made this year can be given to Faith Smith for the Ronald McDonald House, Clarice O’Neill for Families Living Violence Free, or Quilts of Valor.

New Business:

Gerry Charleton and Barbara Bockiaro will be greeting guests and new members this year. These two ladies will see that new people are made to feel welcome.

With the new year, it is time to pay annual dues of $25. Those members seventy-two or older are not required to pay dues.

Members discussed donating to the Senior Center for usage of the facility. A motion was passed to purchase an item worth approximately $100 for the Senior Center. Rachel will talk to the director for ideas on what to purchase.

Hassie Boddy has three quilts on display at the National Humanities Center in RTP. Her quilts will be showing through June.

The schedule for 2012 programs and workshops was presented.

The March workshop, Anita’s Arrow Head, will be taught by Nikki Moshier of the Sew Happy Quilt Guild. Participants may purchase their own fabric or if they would like to donate the quilt to charity, the fabric will be provided.

Quilt in a Box is this year’s challenge and was presented by Donna Compton. Participants are to choose fabrics to put in a box that will be passed around to other participants who will make a 12.5” unfinished block from the fabric in each box. Your box is to be labeled with name, address, phone number and email address. Boxes will be exchanged at each meeting. All finished blocks will be exchanged at December’s meeting.

First and Last Quilts were presented by Sandy King whose first quilt was Trip Around the World. Her last quilt was Jamestown from William Morris fabric.

Anne Dickerson presented her first quilt which was made for her oldest daughter. Her last quilt was hand embroidered blocks from ladies in the nursing home.

Georgia Darnell also presented her first quilt, Rob Peter to Pay Paul. Her last quilt was Grandmother’s Garden.

First and last quilts for February will be shared by Hassie Boddy and Lynn Paticky.

Members enjoyed pairing up for a game of Quiltable, a Scrabble like game using quilting words. The winning team will be announced at February’s meeting.

Show and tell included: Clarice O’Neill with the last blocks from Kathy Stinson’s Blocks of the Month. A Four Patch Scramble by Barbara Bockiaro donated to the domestic violence center. Peggy Stocks with a framed Baltimore album block. Rachel Wessels shared her 2011 challenge piece which was Sunrise Sunset, a gradation of colors. Hollow Cube II was shared by Kaye Pegram and Faith Smith shared a quilted thrift store find.

Meet The Quilter

Welcome to our first segment of "Meet The Quilter" where a member of our guild will be interviewed for recognition on our blog!

Name: Faith V. Smith

How long have you been quilting? Since 1995

Who or what got you interested in quilting? My mother, Sally Vaughan, quilted. She died in 1980. I have always had an interest in quilting. In 1995 there was a display of kids quilts made by the members of Vance Quilts R' Us for the Ronald McDonald House. One of these had a label made by Peggy Stocks. That September I read in the local paper that she was teaching beginning quilt making at Vance Granville Community College. I signed up and took classes for 2 years. I used all of my vacation time from work to attend classes half a day each week. We were taught to hand piece and all of the basic quilting skills. But it was not long before the sewing machine took over all of my piecing.

What is your favorite style of quilting? I really like traditional quilting. I also had a hard time buying expensive fabric. My mind set was a quilt was made from scraps. I still like scraps - just expensive fabric scraps now.

What is your favorite type of quilt? I like bed size quilts and large throw sizes. But I do make a lot of crib size.

Do you make your own patterns or are you more comfortable using published patterns? I like using patterns that have been published by others. But one day I do want to design my own. I have done some design work on small quilt pieces.

How many quilts have you made? Bed size - 40 / Large throw - 19 / Crib - 56 / Wallhangings - 16 / Art - 9

How many of the quilts that you have made, do you still own? 45

Do you enter your quilts in shows? Yes!

Have you won ribbons on your quilts that have hung in shows and if so how many ribbons do you have at present? I have (3) 1st place, (7) 2nd place, (1) 4th pace, (1) 5th place, and (1) Viewer's Choice ribbons.

What do you do with the quilts you make? I have given more than 60% away and the rest are either on display or in storage in my home.

What charitable organizations, if any, are you associated with in your quilting? Ronald McDonald House, Hero Quilts for the Wounded, Social Services children, Domestic Violence, Allpeoplequilt pillowcases

What type of fabrics do you like to work with? Cottons of good quality. And I still have a passion to work with scraps.

Have you ever taken any quilting classes with nationally known teachers? I have taken classes with Priscilla Hair, Scott Murkin, Kim Deneault, Pepper Cory, Cathy Wiggins, Judy Lily, Susan Brittingham, and Jinny Beyer.

Is there anything else you would like for us to know? Peggy Stocks first taught me to quilt and I owe most of what I know to her. I would also like to recognize Debbie Powell who operates Miss Lou's Quilting Studio for being an inspiration to me as well. I would also like to give a special thanks to Thearica Burroughs who operates Cover Your Little Piggies Quilting Studio and Gift Shop. She is part responsible for 6 of the 13 ribbons I have won. Those of you who have the good fortune to have her quilt for you are blessed. She takes my piecing and turns it into a prize winning quilt and for that I am grateful.

Quick Quilts Demonstration

Guild member Debbie Powell did a demonstration for us on quick quilts! These quilts work up lightning fast with very little effort! They are so easy in fact, some require no pattern!

Trunk Show by Clarice

A couple of months ago, our guild president booked a trunk show by guild member, Clarice. We were wowed by the many beautiful quilts she brought to show us! She is a remarkable and talented quilter! This is only a small sampling of her work!

She has one of our members helping her by holding the quilts so everyone can get a good look at them!

Dare To Be Ugly Challenge Revealed!

In April, Thearica Burroughs asked the guild members if they would like to participate in a Dare To be Ugly Challenge. The show of hands was really great so she brought fabric to the next guild meeting and handed it out to the ones who wanted to take part. Fast forward to our August meeting and we have our reveal!

This was the fabric each person started with! The rules were that you had to use at least 90% of the fabric and you could add as much of any other fabrics as you wished to create your project.

The following are the results of the challenge! Everyone did a fantastic job and Mrs. Burroughs wishes to thank each and every one who participated!

Two other guild members made projects from the fabric but gave them as gifts before the reveal. They made a pocketbook and a totebag.

And........ the winning entry was this Topiary Tree wallhanging!! Congratulations!

May Meeting!

Our May meeting was lots of fun with one of the members demonstrating a technique, new to me, called Back Tacking Applique. She brought kits for each member and showed us how to applique in this manner. She has said that if we bring back the finished square that she will take them and make a charity quilt with them. However, if you want to keep yours, you are more than welcome to.

Our Christmas committee has asked us to purchase a gift bag and fill it with approximately $10 worth of gifts. These will be brought to the Christmas meeting and exchanged.

Our June Meeting will be back at the Senior Citizen's Center as will the June 12th workshop.

Show and Tell for the evening!

Thearica Burroughs also showed quilts that have been made for a current Quilt Raffle that she is hosting. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities! This is the 3rd year she has hosted a raffle to benefit this worthy charity! Please see her for tickets if you are interested! There are 36 quilts being given away this year! She will show more quilts at the next meeting!

April Meeting

Thearica Burroughs issued a challenge to all guild members who wished to participate. The challenge is called Dare To Be Ugly. She presented each person who wanted to join a FQ of an ugly fabric. Each playing member will have until the July meeting to create something pretty with their FQ. The point of the challenge is to cut it up and piece it with other fabrics from your stash and create something very pretty with it. Each guild member who joined gave a dollar bill for their fabric which was put into the Christmas fund which will be used in December to adopt a family and help them buy their childrens Christmas gifts.

Uncle Eli's Quilting Party!

Well we all know Uncle Eli invented the cotton gin...

In 1921 Principal E. P. Dixon started high school classes in the nearby vacant cotton gin, naming the school for the inventor, Eli Whitney.

In 1923 high school classes relocated to a building which was on the site the quilting party now meets. In 1928 a primary grade school building was added for students of local one room type schools along with a uniting connector auditorium that was also used for community events. Here began Uncle Eli's Quilting Party in 1931. This is a one-day quilting bee and quilt show that continues annually on the 1st Thursday of April!

8 of our guild members made their way to the party that Thursday and had tons of fun! And looks like we failed to get our President in one of these photos!

The quilts were beautiful, the people were friendly, and the food was delicious!!

VanceQuiltsRUs met on February 8, 2010. Our president had issued a UFO Challenge and the members were asked to bring 1-5 UFO's from home. Each member that has joined the challenge will have until the October meeting to finish the UFO's they showed at this meeting. Vance Quilts R Us extends to everyone, a warm and cordial invitation to join us for fellowship, fun and lots of quilt talk! We meet on the second Monday evening of each month at 6:30 p.m. Our meetings generally last for approximately 2 hours. During these 2 hours you are sure to meet new friends and learn many new things from the members. And please do not be shy of teaching us what you know! Our meeting place is in the Senior Citizens Building located on Garnett Street in Henderson, NC.
