Minutes and Pictures from February Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Rachel Wessels at 6:30.

Visitors included Patricia Wilson and Sandra Hudson from Sew Happy Quilt Guild. Gerry Charleston’s sisters, Laurie Campbell and Faye McKissik were in attendance as were Brenda Wiard and Betty Stevenson as guests of Jane McBride.

Members celebrating February birthdays were Barbara Bockario, Linda Wincovich, Anne Dickerson, Kathy Faucette, Phyllis Murphy, Barbara Bond and Stevie Scaramelli.

Treasurer’s report -

Karen reported that there is $1215.58 in the treasury following collection of some dues and $75 paid out to First Presbyterian Church for use of their facilities for the April meeting.

Old Business -

There are many raffle tickets left to sell for the Christmas Quilt. The raffle will take place April 30th.

A motion was passed to create a credit of $100 at Supply Line for the Senior Center to purchase plastic serving pieces. Faith Smith agreed to take care of this.

Quiltable winners from January were Belinda Leach and Donna Compton. Each received a fat quarter bundle.

New Business -

Lake Gaston Piecemakers will be having their annual quilt show at R. T. Arnold Public Library in South Hill, VA through the month of March.

Marilyn Doheny will be presenting a trunk show at our April meeting. Refreshments and set up committee are Thearica Burroughs, Karen Haney and Georgia Darnell.

A sign up sheet was passed around for Anita’s Arrowhead which will be taught by Nikki Moshier from Sew Happy Quilt Guild at a workshop on March 24^th. Cost of the workshop is $10 which will be refunded upon attendance at the workshop.

November’s meeting will be a fashion show of quilted garments. A sign up sheet was passed.

First and last quilts were presented by Donna Wesseman with a baby quilt and Valentine quilt as her first quilts. Her last quilt was an adaptation of Hollow Cube.

Hassie Boddy shared her first quilt, Trip Around the World, created in 1986. Her last quilt was a Whig Rose applique.

Lynn Currin and Donna Compton will share first and last quilts in March.

Sandy King presented a program on squaring a quilt. Debbie Powell shared her method of finishing the binding of a quilt.

Patricia Wilson from Sew Happy Quilt Guild presented a hands on program demonstrating how to make prairie points. Her method showed us how to make a continuous string of prairie points by cutting and folding a strip of fabric.

Show and tell included Belinda Alston’s “No More Strippin’ for Me!”, Barbara Bond’s circle quilt in red, black and white, Kaye Pegram’s purple and white wedding sampler, Hassie Boddy’s wool penny rug, Rachel Wessells’ placemat, and Belinda Leach’s t-shirt yarn rug. Jane McBride shared a Christmas tree skirt she completed using machine quilting as the 2011 challenge. Thearica Burroughs showed the completed holiday quilt that will be raffled for the Oxford Senior Center.

Following adjournment of the meeting, those participating in the 2012 Quilt in a Box challenge gathered to exchange boxes.

Minutes from January, 2012 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Rachel Wessels at 6:30 p.m.

Treasurer’s report was $840.58. In 2011, $120 was collected in the Christmas fund. A check for that amount was given to the Salvation Army in December, 2011.

For birthdays this year, the honoree can choose between a binding card or a fat quarter. Celebrating a January birthday was Lynn Currin.

Old Business:

Raffle tickets for the Christmas quilt displayed at Miss Lou’s continue to be sold. Guild members can get tickets to sell from Debbie Powell or Karen Hanny.

Charity quilts made this year can be given to Faith Smith for the Ronald McDonald House, Clarice O’Neill for Families Living Violence Free, or Quilts of Valor.

New Business:

Gerry Charleton and Barbara Bockiaro will be greeting guests and new members this year. These two ladies will see that new people are made to feel welcome.

With the new year, it is time to pay annual dues of $25. Those members seventy-two or older are not required to pay dues.

Members discussed donating to the Senior Center for usage of the facility. A motion was passed to purchase an item worth approximately $100 for the Senior Center. Rachel will talk to the director for ideas on what to purchase.

Hassie Boddy has three quilts on display at the National Humanities Center in RTP. Her quilts will be showing through June.

The schedule for 2012 programs and workshops was presented.

The March workshop, Anita’s Arrow Head, will be taught by Nikki Moshier of the Sew Happy Quilt Guild. Participants may purchase their own fabric or if they would like to donate the quilt to charity, the fabric will be provided.

Quilt in a Box is this year’s challenge and was presented by Donna Compton. Participants are to choose fabrics to put in a box that will be passed around to other participants who will make a 12.5” unfinished block from the fabric in each box. Your box is to be labeled with name, address, phone number and email address. Boxes will be exchanged at each meeting. All finished blocks will be exchanged at December’s meeting.

First and Last Quilts were presented by Sandy King whose first quilt was Trip Around the World. Her last quilt was Jamestown from William Morris fabric.

Anne Dickerson presented her first quilt which was made for her oldest daughter. Her last quilt was hand embroidered blocks from ladies in the nursing home.

Georgia Darnell also presented her first quilt, Rob Peter to Pay Paul. Her last quilt was Grandmother’s Garden.

First and last quilts for February will be shared by Hassie Boddy and Lynn Paticky.

Members enjoyed pairing up for a game of Quiltable, a Scrabble like game using quilting words. The winning team will be announced at February’s meeting.

Show and tell included: Clarice O’Neill with the last blocks from Kathy Stinson’s Blocks of the Month. A Four Patch Scramble by Barbara Bockiaro donated to the domestic violence center. Peggy Stocks with a framed Baltimore album block. Rachel Wessels shared her 2011 challenge piece which was Sunrise Sunset, a gradation of colors. Hollow Cube II was shared by Kaye Pegram and Faith Smith shared a quilted thrift store find.
